Like many of our vendors, Michele Strotman began her business making Christmas gifts. Two years ago, she needed gifts for her family and friends, so she made up a few products and Rustic Rooster was born.
Michele says, “For the longest time, I told people I couldn’t draw a straight line. Now, I can.” Not only has her skill grown, but her business has given her the confidence to always try. She tells Backroads Market that a challenge is what most gets her in the mood to create. “If I think I can’t do it, you can bet it will be the next thing I try to do.”

This can-do attitude has shown her daughter that she can do anything if she applies herself, which Michele thinks, the most important thing about her business. In fact, Michele loves her business for the ability to be home with her child and set her own hours. Oh, and getting to work in her pajamas. Always a good thing.
Michele’s favorite product is the Superman sign which also appeals to her many customers. But the real customer favorite is the hilarious Wicked Chicken sign. This best-seller is a surefire attention-getter, even for dogs. But don’t bring your male dogs around Michele’s booth–at one show a shopping pup relieved himself on one of her signs. Funny in hindsight, not so laugh-inducing at the time.
Michele has warmed our hearts with her expectations of Backroads Market. She says, “I envision it to feel like a fall, open air market, akin to the Gaslight Festival and St. James Art Fair in Louisville…” Comparing us to St. James Art Fair? We’ll take it. Michele is excited to be part of the inaugural Backroads Market on October 7. She’s looking forward to meeting new people, customers and vendors, and hopes Backroads Market proves to be an annual event (which it totally will).
See you there!
