Though Roberta Gayer has always wanted to be a potter, she hasn’t always been an artist. In fact, she was a self-proclaimed band geek who never took a single art class in school.
She got into pottery thanks to her day job. “One day at work, I met a woman that had a pottery studio and we started talking,” says Roberta. She went to the studio one fine day and was immediately hooked.
Roberta’s new friend gave her a kiln, and that was all it took.
Fortune smiled on us that day.

Roberta loves every aspect of working with clay. “There are no boundaries,” according to this talented potter.
She recently attended the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee to hone her craft further. She says, “Being around other people that love what you love is so inspiring. You feed off each other. You get original ideas from other’s ideas, if that makes any sense.”
Makes perfect sense to us.
Though Roberta creates everything from bowls to plates to mugs and much more (like that week’s worth of shot glasses above) one of her favorites is an original flower vase made of extruded parts and slab built parts. “I do love making those and they sell really well. Each one is different.” Can you even? We’ve got to have one!
Like us, Roberta is inspired by all sorts of music. Jazz, country, classic rock. “It just depends on the mood I’m in at the time,” she says. “Jason Mraz puts me in a great mood and I love working to his music.”
That’s the stuff.
We can’t wait to see what Roberta has on offer at Backroads Market on October 7. And Roberta is excited about the Market because it is new and is set in a beautiful town. We couldn’t agree more.
See you there!
