From a young age, Josh Ray was always trying to further himself and do the next big thing. At 13, he started his first business, The Bread Basket, where he made and sold homemade breads and cakes. By the age of 14, he had taken up clowning and did children’s birthday parties and festivals complete with balloon twisting, face painting, and even magic tricks! A life-long creative entrepreneur, he has always wanted to use his skills to further himself in life.
Aren’t we lucky he discovered bath bombs?
The Bath Lab began as just a simple hobby for Josh, something to do in his free time and on days off from his full-time job. He started out making bath bombs just for fun for friends and family while it slowly occurred to him that there was a business in the making.
The side benefit of creating The Bath Lab is that operating a business together has brought Josh and his partner, Phillip, closer. They work hard together to make new products, package orders for shipping, and attend craft shows like Backroads Market as a team.
These days, though bath bombs are still the backbone of The Bath Lab, Josh and Phillip also offers sugar scrubs, body butters, lotions, and bubble bath! The Bath Lab even has several other new products that will be released later this year.
Josh found out last year that his bombs even serve multiple purposes. At a show, one shopper took the time to look at every bath bomb in his booth booth but only purchased one. When she was checking out she said that she doesn’t take baths and that this bath bomb was going to sit in her underwear drawer to keep her underthings smelling fabulous.
While the memory makes Josh chuckle, we’re kind of wondering… Why didn’t we think of that?!
Josh attributes a lot of his creativity to his mother. “Her entire side of the family is extremely creative with arts and crafts and music,” he says. That genetic predisposition means Josh’s brain never shuts off. “Everyday there are different ideas and projects running through my head and I want to do them all!”
We get it, Josh. If only we didn’t have to sleep.
For Josh, the best thing about running his own business is that he gets to decide when he works and when he doesn’t. But then again, the worst part about running his own business? That he gets to decide when he works and when he doesn’t…
Because “Sometimes I just want to binge watch Stranger Things on Netflix and eat Girl Scout cookies! I’ve had to find that happy medium where I can run my own business but have fun doing it too.”
When he is working, though? He rocks out to just about anything (except country music), but you can usually catch him listening to tranquil ambient music or movie soundtracks. His fave inspirational songs include Try by P!nk, Thankful by Josh Groban, and Human by Christina Perri. P!nk reminds him to never give up on his dreams, Groban reminds him how grateful he is for his life, and Perri reminds him that if he crashes, he has to get back up and keep moving on.
We’re feeling pretty inspired ourselves right now.
Josh’s favorite part of his business is mixing different fragrances and colorants to create a one of a kind bath bomb. With such a wide variety of colors and scents such as Mommy Me Time, Love Bite, and It’s My Birthday, Josh must be as happy making bombs as we are buying them.
A customer favorite is the Clear Mind Shower Steamers, which are a special mix of menthol, eucalyptus oil, and peppermint oil. “They’re great for when you have a head cold or just need to relax,” Josh tells us. We’ve got to get our hands on some before allergy season. And the rest of life.
Make sure you stop by and say hi to the guys at Backroads Market on May 11 & 12 and grab some of their fabulous products. They’re looking forward to meeting you.
See you there!
