Carly Young-Bolander started Sis & Birdie last year after her father passed away. It was an emotional outlet as well as a way to take her mind off things. Eventually, her mom got involved and it became an outlet for both of them. Nowadays Mom is just as passionate about the business as Carly.
Carly loves that as a small-business owner, all creative decisions must pass through her first. That translates into her getting to love everything she makes. She admits, though, that there are times when it looks like JoAnn’s exploded in her living room.
We feel ya, sister.
While her fledgling business is seeing its share of success, Backroads Market is pleased to be hosting Sis & Birdie early. Carly says, “Since I just started Sis & Birdie last year I am still in the learning phase of crafting and craft shows. It has been difficult at times, but mostly it has been fun.”
We’re on a mission to make Backroads as fun and easy as possible for Carly. And all of you.
Though she doesn’t listen to music while she works, Carly confesses that she often plays Harry Potter movies for background noise. “I’ve watched all of them a million times, so I don’t have to pay attention in order to know what’s going on.”
Her creativity is sparked by her daughter and the business’s namesake, Sis. Just thinking of all of Sis’s adventures as a child and now as a teen, coupled with her imagination and the constant joy she has, guides Carly’s decisions about what to make.
Carly’s favorite product is the Elephant Pajama Bag, which rocks because it’s her customers’ favorite as well. The bag is so popular that at her very first show she not only sold out of her stock but also took 12 orders that day for them to be made and shipped.
If you want an Elephant Pajama Bag of your own (and who doesn’t?), you’d better get to Market early on May 11 & 12. Let’s help Carly expand her business and show her how fun a Market can be.
See you there!
