Ashton Boehman creates art on the daily. She’s working on her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, so though she started out making soaps as a hobby, she has dreams of becoming even more of a presence at markets and festivals when she graduates. Combining her soap-making skills with her art is sure to guarantee her success.
Ashton officially started selling soap in 2014, and as she has learned more about art through her college classes, the business has grown.
“Sometimes I get burnt out on making things,” she says, referring to her class work. “I find that walking or driving through the countryside or visiting local gardens inspires me to make.” Inspired by colors in nature, Ashton keeps a sketchbook with her at all times to jot notes in. Her ideas come from song lyrics, quotes, or images she likes, and she turns them into art with watercolors.
Ashton gets pumped when my customers leave reviews on Etsy or Facebook or tell her personally how her products have helped them. “I love hearing feedback about my soap,” she says.
There are some drawbacks to running her own business, though. “I live with roommates,” she tells us, “and because I have so many supplies and I require so much space, I have taken over the spare room so that I essentially have two bedrooms full of Fox and Flora Maker items. I feel bad because no one else can use the spare room. I’m not sure if that’s funny or just sad.”
Maybe sad for her roommates, but we totally get it.
Fox & Flora has helped Ashton become an entrepreneur and encouraged her to learn all aspects of managing a small business. “This is helpful because, as an artist, my business is myself,” she says.
Yeah. We get that, too.
Ashton’s favorite Fox & Flora products are her sugar scrubs, but her customers also love her Lavender and Oat Soap. Sounds yummy. In a smell-good kind of way. We’re thinking we need some of her Coffee Soap. We promise not to eat it. Unless it’s very early in the morning and a complete accident.
We’re not making any promises about her Vanilla Coffee Lip Balm, though. Ashton also makes lip balm in other flavors like Fresh Mint, Buttercream, and Rum & Coke.
Follow Fox & Flora on Facebook and Instagram, but you should totally come to Market and see if she has any of her Charcoal Mask or Sea Goddess Mud Face Mask. Because naturally beautiful skin is ah-maz-ing.
See you there!
