Vendor Spotlight: The Mustard Seed

The Mustard Seed will have a wide variety of yummy candles for sale at Backroads Market in Leavenworth, Indiana on October 6, 2018.

The Mustard Seed Candles began as maker Sheila Hood’s expression of gratitude to God after her husband spontaneously and uncharacteristically called in to work one day seven years ago. An explosion on that very day left two of his long time co-workers dead and temporarily shut down the company.

Sheila’s mother encouraged her to pray about the financial needs of her family and reminded her what faith the size of a mustard seed can do when God gets involved. A lot of praying and a little brainstorming later, Sheila knew candle-making was her answer.

With such a faith-filled story behind the  name of her business, it has to make you chuckle that Sheila gets asked if her candles really smell like mustard at least once per show.

They don’t. The Mustard Seed features scents like Vanilla Hazelnut Mocha (Sheila’s favorite) and Fresh Fruit Slices (a long-standing customer favorite). Personally, we’re really looking to fall scents like Pumpkin Souffle, Autumn, and Sweet Cranberry.  “Anything can spark an idea for me,” Sheila tells us. “It can be a smell, a new experience or, frequently, a memory of a childhood experience like sharing Christmas candies at my grandparents home. ”

Sheila believes her candles can foster a more welcoming home environment for her customers. She pours faith into each and every candle so that her customers can be encouraged by the promise of Christ like she is.  Including her faith in her business is just one of the aspects she loves about being an entrepreneur. Being her own boss and setting her own schedule also make her happy, as does being able to test her products and ensure that they are the best they can be for her customers.

You can follow The Mustard Seed on Facebook, but if you want to meet our sweet Sheila, you’ll have to come out for Market Day on October 6 and join in all the fun.

See you there!
