So I’m standing in this store and I’m waiting. And waiting. and- YES! There’s someone (I yell in my head). Annnnnddddd……nope. They turn a corner quickly to do who knows what. The only thing I know for sure is that they are not here to ring up my super important ceramic llama. Yeah, you heard. It’s important. I don’t judge your purchases, Gary*.
Anyway, I wait for what feels like an eternity and FINALLY a light from Heaven shines down on Judy, the gal with the vest that means business.
“Did you find everything ok?” Says Judy**. “Yep. Sure did.” I say.
Now, I don’t expect Judy and I to end up instant besties during this purchase. I have friends. I’m cool. But Y’all. Judy was cold. And mean. Like, cue Taylor Swift- Why you gotta be so mean?
Why is it that customer service is such a crapshoot anymore?
I mean, it really feels like a game of Russian Roulette just to go shopping.
I want to shop at a place that is excited to see me. A place that makes me their top priority and helps me accomplish what I came in their establishment to do. A place that says, “My pleasure!” and smiles brightly at you as they hand you your purchase.
Do you know a place similar to what I described? I can think of a couple and let me tell you, I am a REPEAT customer. It makes you feel good when they know your name or ask about your day and seem to genuinely care about your answer.
I want this to be what you experience when you enter the Backroads Market shop. No, we aren’t in a location yet, but when I think of important details that I want to focus on in this business, customer service is in the top 5. I want you to have a wonderful experience when you walk through our doors and I want you to leave and tell everyone you know about just how great it was so they can experience it for themselves.
What I don’t want is for you to walk in the door, select a few items, walk up to the counter to pay and see no one working the front but instead find a toy pig with a sign on it that says “squeeze me for help“. This is a legit thing in a store I’ve been in. You can’t make this stuff up. Go ahead and insert my side eye face here. Y’all. I’m not squeezing your pig. I have no clue what said pig will do when I squeeze him and I don’t intend to find out. HARD PASS.
So my question to you is, what is something that really stands out to you when you think of excellent customer service? I’ve posed this question before on our facebook and instagram pages and the feedback was super helpful. I’m writing everything down and making sure to implement your fabulous suggestions if at all possible when the time comes.
Just fyi- if you suggest having a pig on the counter in the new shop, that is NOT going in to the suggestion book. You know who you are. You know you though about it. Just don’t do it. That is all.
* I feel the need to clarify. I have nothing against the Garys of the world. I just picked a random name it and it happened to be Gary. No Gary has wronged me recently. I’m good. I just want you to really feel what I’m talking about and sometimes proper nouns get thrown into the mix to help you to really connect with my thoughts. So Gary, listen. Nothing personal. Really. Okay? Good.
** Hey, Judy. Please read the section that precedes this one. Make sure and enter “Judy” anytime it says “Gary” and that should clear things up. Good talk.
